History of Cockburn
The City of Cockburn, located in the southern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, was established in 1871. Originally known as Fremantle Road District, it underwent several name changes before becoming Cockburn in 1955, reflecting the area's broader governance beyond Fremantle. Its early growth was driven by the development of transport and shipping, with key industries like whaling and shipbuilding establishing a foundation for economic activity.
Throughout the 20th century, Cockburn transitioned from a rural to an urban municipality. The post-World War II population boom and industrial growth led to significant urban development. Today, Cockburn encompasses residential, industrial, and environmental areas, playing a key role in Perth’s expanding southern metropolitan region.
