History of Canning
The City of Canning, located in the Perth metropolitan area of Western Australia, has a rich history dating back to 1871. Originally known as the "Canning Road District," it was named after the Canning River, which runs through the area. Early settlement in Canning was driven by agriculture and industry, particularly timber and flour milling. The construction of essential infrastructure like roads and bridges in the 19th century helped the area develop into a vital transport hub for the surrounding region.
Over time, the district grew in size and importance, undergoing several changes in governance. In 1923, it became the Canning District, and later in 1961, it gained town status. Rapid suburban expansion after World War II transformed Canning into a significant residential and industrial area. Finally, in 1979, it was proclaimed a city. Today, the City of Canning is known for its diverse community, thriving industries, and focus on sustainable urban development.
